"Athenian Republic"

There is an obnoxious e-mail going around about the natural decline of Democracy. They use what happened to the "Athenian Republic" 2,000 years ago as evidence.

There was no "Athenian Republic", 2,000 or 10,000 years ago..nada! This was ALL made up stuff. I took a course in government while in college and this "bogus theory" of democratic demise is just that, BOGUS! There probably wasn't any observation made in 1787 about this theory or that there ever was even a professor named Alexander Tyler. This Professor Olsen and his presidential stats sound "fishy" as well. Who makes up this stuff? What are their motives?
